Greece currently has approximately 15,000 paraplegics and quadriplegics out of which 5,000 are members of the Association’s 4 subsidiaries (Athens, Thessaloniki, Lamia and Argos). The Athens subsidiary offers services to 2,500 members. Out of these, 1,050 are seniors. Through the years, the Association has spearheaded the passing of laws that greatly improve the lives of those with severe mobile disabilities such as: provision of the paraplegic – quadriplegic allowance and employment in various state agencies. It also offers a variety of services, such as social services, workshops, operation of a specialized beach, and a wheelchair basketball team.
Vehicle
The grant regards the purchase of a small van and its transformation in order to make it wheelchair-accessible. Via the Paraplegic Association’s Department of Social Services, the van will serve approximately 200 elderly individuals on a yearly basis. The Department has a specialized social worker and transport services are provided to paraplegic seniors. As a result, disabled individuals are able to visit the hospital, their doctor, or other public sector services. Furthermore, the Association has recently started a care at home program for elderly disabled persons that live in low-income areas of Western Attica. The van will also serve beneficiaries of this care at home program.
