Program for Parents & Caregivers of Persons with Disabilities

The grant regards a program with 2 pillars: The first involves the creation of a pilot support service for parents/caregivers of people with disabilities, which will support them in helping to improve their quality of life. The service will be staffed by personnel from the two organizations with expertise in intellectual disability and issues affecting the elderly. The main objectives of the service are to provide support on social security issues and foster contacts for public support in regards to the disability of the person supported.

The second pillar is based on international best practices that show that elderly parents, in particular, are more receptive to the opinion of parents in the same age group. Peer-to-peer support groups will be created for parents of older disabled children, using international best practice models. In addition, 10 volunteer parent advocates will be trained to support other parents.
