The organization is managed largely by volunteers aimed at supporting patients and their caregivers with the disease and the physical, mental, social and financial complications arising from it. Activities include the participation of patients in the activities of the Association, in order to develop a spirit of mutual aid, mutual support, care for themselves and their families. The aim is to strengthen the social prominence of patients with Pulmonary Hypertension and ensure a proper quality of life through the development of programs related to their psychosocial rehabilitation and support of their financial and psychological decline, as an aggravating factor of the disease. The association has also created a hostel in Athens, allowing patients from across Greece to stay at the hostel when visits to specialist medical centers in Athens are required. Out of the Association’s 1,500 members, a fifth (an estimated 300 individuals) are elderly.
Mobile Oxygen Bottles
The grant regards the purchase of 5 mobile oxygen bottles. The association currently has three old ones, and these are lent to members of their association when they have a specific need to move around or travel but are nevertheless required to be connected to an oxygen supply. For example, if patients are required to travel abroad for surgery, they are required to have the mobile oxygen bottles that weigh less than the standard larger ones (2.5 kilos instead of about 25 kilos). The oxygen machines from the organization are provided to people through a booking system, as needed.
