Working towards this goal, Diabetes Nonprofit Organization raises awareness regarding the prevention of diabetes and issues related to the disease. Special emphasis is placed on educating children and the elderly. Since its founding, the organization has freely examined and informed about 50,000 persons, out of which 10,000 were seniors. It is estimated that approximately 10% of the Greek population suffers from diabetes, while a percentage of 3-4% does not know that it suffers from the disease. Awareness-raising and early diagnosis have been proven to be the best prevention for the disease.
Medical Examinations and Awareness-Raising
The grant regards diabetes diagnostic examinations for seniors in various Prefectures in Greece, namely, in the Peloponnese, in Sterea Ellada, in Epirus and in Macedonia, over several months along, with awareness-raising for the disease by specialized doctors. A central village in each region will be chosen as a base and, over the course of a few days, several smaller surrounding villages will receive visits by the diabetes team for the examinations and awareness-raising campaigns. The team of volunteer doctors will include a general physician, a diabetes specialist, a podiatrist, and oftentimes a pulmonary specialist, cardiologist and an ophthalmologist; in this realm, examinees will also be offered an added value diagnosis of other health issues related to diabetes. A nutritionist and psychologist will be part of the team where possible. The estimated beneficiaries are at least 1,500 individuals who will be examined and approximately 1,000 persons who will attend the informational speeches and awareness-raising events by the doctors.
