Throughout the years, Doctors of the World – Greek Delegation has organized missions of medical and humanitarian aid in more than 50 countries. In Greece, it offers an abundance of services and programs. Some of these include polyclinics that provide primary medical health care and psychosocial support to people who lack access to the National Health Care and mobile medical units for geographically isolated areas for diagnostic and preventive examinations.
Medical and Psychological Support of Isolated and Vulnerable Individuals 60+
The grant regards an extension of the previous program that TIMA supported in 2020 and 2021 to support isolated and vulnerable elderly. These include elderly who have comorbidity issues, are completely alone, or particularly socially and financially vulnerable. The program will provide the following services to the elderly:
- Support from a gerontologist, psychologist, and social worker who will oversee each individual’s specific needs.
- Free medicine and in some cases food packages to particularly vulnerable elderly will be directly delivered to their homes.
- Provision of tablets to isolated individuals and their access to companions as well as online lectures and a quick connection to Doctor of the World’s services (gerontologist, psychologist).
- Training to elderly via a program of educational seminars on self-care at the 25 Open Protection Centers for the Elderly (OPCEs) of the Attica region.
The beneficiaries are an estimated 800 isolated elderly in the Attica region in need of direct medical support and an estimated minimum of 1,200 elderly who will attend the OPCE training seminars.
