Since 2003, Butterfly Bone Health Society has been offering free osteoporosis examinations through the use of specialized mobile equipment. These examinations involve a close collaboration with local volunteer doctors who interpret the results of the examinations and propose treatment when necessary. Each examination offers information concerning prevention, tests and treatment for free. Between 2015 and 2022, Butterfly Bone Health Society organized about 315 such events throughout Greece with over 57,000 tests performed. In collaboration with osteoporosis-related scientific agencies (Musculoskeletal Disorders Research Laboratory at the University of Athens‘ School of Medicine), Butterfly Bone Health Society performs scientific studies collecting epidemiological data regarding this long-standing disease. The results of the studies have been published in renowned scientific journals and international conferences. Butterfly Bone Health Society is recognized by the International Osteoporosis Foundation and the World Health Organization.
Equipment
The grant regards the purchase of specialized Echolight/R.E.M.S. Technology (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry) medical equipment which is a portable ultrasound equipment that measures bone density. This is a state-of-the-art portable equipment that is practically equivalent to the DXA machines that are found in hospitals and diagnostic centers, with the advantage of using ultrasound waves to diagnose osteoporosis.
