The Association of Volunteers for Assistance to the Patients in Healthcare Institutions was founded in 2007 with the aim to provide care to lonely patients of the Attica public hospitals with the aid of volunteers.

In 2013, approximately 400 volunteers offered 30,000 hours of individual assistance to 150 lonely patients, among which many elders, in the Attica public hospitals. The Association assigns volunteers to assist lonely patients with various bureaucratic processes like health booklet renewal and examinations receipt and accompany them to various locations including rehabilitation center and other hospital after their release from the hospital. The theoretical training of volunteers lasts 7 weeks and covers 14 subjects, including elderly patients. All subjects are taught by experts on a volunteer basis. For their practical training, the new volunteers attend 5 individual assistance shifts that are performed by experienced volunteers.

The grant regards the provision of support for the volunteers, coordination of the volunteer process and connection with the public hospitals of Attica. The grant will also allow the Association to expand existing programs and create new ones aimed at the assistance of lonely patients.
