The free examinations will be provided to a minimum of 600 persons in cooperation with the Research Center of the KAT Hospital as well as a chain of diagnostic centers throughout Greece in order to ensure maximum coverage all over the country. Approximately one third of the beneficiaries will be from outside Athens. Butterfly Bone Health Society went about informing osteoporosis sufferers through its network in order for them to be able to receive the free examination. They also targeted indigent individuals afflicted with osteoporosis via the social welfare departments of various municipalities. The persons who will undergo the testing will receive a voucher from Butterfly Bone Health Society that they will present to the diagnostic center in order to receive the free examination. Osteoporosis is a chronic disease with a high incidence in the elderly and the most necessary test for monitoring the disease is DEXA. This must be done in accordance with international and Greek instructions at two points of the body: spine and hip. Patients with established osteoporosis should be tested at least once or twice a year, however, due to budget cuts in the insurance funds, patients can only be tested once every two years and at only one point in the body. This situation has caused a great deal of new fractures in a large proportion of patients and correspondingly increasing hospital costs. The examinations will begin in October 2017.
Medical Examination Provision
Butterfly Bone Health Society will be providing, through a grant of the TIMA Charitable Foundation, free dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) examinations to uninsured elderly patients with osteoporosis.
