Odyssea’s mission is to empower excluded and vulnerable refugee, migrant and local communities in Greece, enable self-reliance, accelerate efforts towards a more inclusive society and democratise access to technological advances. Odyssea does this by bridging global and local resources in open innovation, vocational education, participatory design services and entrepreneurship, with and for excluded communities. The organizations work combines three key strands of activity including an academy, an employability arm and a makerspace.
Production and Supply of 50,000 face-shields for Hospitals dealing with Covid in Greece
Using innovative design methods and digital tools from the Digital Fabrication Lab (3D printing, laser cutting and large CNC milling machines), Odyssea went on to utilize manufacturing techniques such as injection molding, in order to enable mass-production and assembly of more than 5,000 units per day, reaching the goal of 50,000 face-shields in less than 10 days. This way, Odyssea was able to match the pressing needs for medical supplies across the country. Part of the TIMA grant was directed towards the creation of a manufacturing mold, thus providing the NGO with the ability to quickly duplicate and ramp-up the production and supply of face-shields in future, and at any given moment in time. A total of 48,000 face-shields were provided to the Ministry of Health whilst another 2,000 were distributed among other NGO’s in need, including care-homes for the elderly, Emfasis, PRAKSIS, and Doctors of the World.
