The aim of the organization is to support people who are facing dementia as well the promotion of scientific research, the application of new therapeutic methods, and the awareness-raising of the public regarding related diseases. The Association is active both in the city of Irakleion as well as the wider region of the Prefecture. It offers free daily Counseling Stations for Dementia in several locations available to people with dementia as well as their caregivers. These stations offer mental strengthening, training, and psychological support. Apart from the Stations, Allilegie also offers a wide variety of activities and services which include: a) Speeches at Health Centers, KAPIs, care homes, churches and schools; b) Informational campaigns with volunteer health professionals of various specialties, on borderline Aegean islands (e.g. Kasos, Nisyros); c) Training seminars & conferences for health professionals and caregivers; d) Research projects and European programs; e) Publication and free distribution of printed material related to dementia.
Healthy and Active Ageing Program
The grant regards the creation of a program aimed at the healthy and active ageing of elderly individuals in the Irakleion Prefecture. The 12-month Program is directed to persons over 60 years of age and special emphasis is placed on selecting persons with low income and without a family support network. The multi-faceted program offers the following services, among others: a) Support groups on psychological matters; b) Presentations/discussions by health-related experts; c) Groups/classes for computer & English instruction; d) music & occupational therapy; e) Recreational activities including excursions, cultural visits and social gatherings; f) Intergenerational activities; g) Awareness-raising of the public on matters pertaining to healthy & active ageing. Additionally, interested seniors will receive theoretical and practical training to become volunteers so that they can then be integrated into the program as coordinators to help render it sustainable. The Program’s goal is to support and help the elderly healthily adjust to the Third Age and to the life following retirement. The beneficiaries are 100 senior residents of the Irakleion Prefecture who will participate in the Program.
