The Club has more than 100 active members and its teams actively compete at the national level. The aim of the Club is the dissemination of chess in the neighborhood of Halandri and in the greater surrounding area. More specifically, it promotes chess in schools, given that chess cultivates imagination, analytical thinking, patience, and time management, while at the same time instilling values such as respect in one’s opponent and team spirit. Additionally, the Club organizes chess tournaments directed to people of all ages and levels and various events for the promotion of chess. Lastly, the Club also frequently organizes lectures and discussions regarding chess and other related educational subjects.

Intergenerational Chess Program

The grant regards an intergenerational chess program between youth and seniors. The purpose of the program is to strengthen social cohesion through chess games between youth and the elderly. It has been medically proven that chess has very positive results in combating Alzheimer’s and plays a role in the improvement of seniors’ daily quality of life. For the younger generations, its benefits include the development of a sense of community and “ownership” as well as the sense of respect that they will gradually develop for the elderly. Additionally, seniors’ psychological and mental states will improve, while bridges of communication will be built between both generations. The program will be implemented in the 3 Open Protection Centers for the Elderly (OPCEs) of the Municipality of Halandri and experienced elderly chess players will be called on to take on a more active role in leading the program. The program is innovative as it uses chess as a way of social connection between young people and the elderly and it is the first time that such a program will be implemented in Greece.

This grant is implemented through the Points of Support program II.
