Since 2002, the organization operates the only integrated Alzheimer’s center in Greece. It includes two Day Centers for persons with dementia and a clinic for short-term hospitalization of dementia patients. Additionally, Nestor operates two psychogeriatric care homes for elders with mental health issues, with 15 residents each. In cooperation with the social services of the Municipalities of Galatsi, Kifissia, Nea Filadelfeia and Vrilissia, the Nestor Psychogeriatric Association also operates memory clinics and provides psychiatric services. In addition, it operates a SOS line that offers free telephone advice to patient caregivers with dementia and directs the interested parties to specialized services in the community. More than 4,500 elderly persons are the yearly recipients of the various services that the Association provides and more than 250 patients with dementia are hospitalized in the short-term clinic each year.
Care at Home Program
The grant regards the expansion of an innovative Care at Home program, currently realized through a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, for elders who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The program is directed to 160 families of dementia patients that have a caregiver, live in the Municipality of Athens, and have low incomes. This multi-faceted and innovative program offers counseling in order to deal with behavioral disorders, information regarding dementia-related changes around the house and creative activities at home; information on legal and insurance issues and connection with the community; medical follow-up and prescriptions, home care such as house cleaning and company to the patient; and monthly food coupons/packets for all families. Through this grant, 40 additional families will be able to join the Care at Home program.
