The metropolitan region has approximately 10,000 inhabitants who reside in 110 villages. It is the largest region in geographical magnitude in Crete but the lowest in population. It is exclusively comprised of villages with no cities. The majority of its villages have less than 100 inhabitants each, most of them over the age of 65. Owing to these demographics, the Metropolis of Lampe, Sybritos and Sfakia is known as the “Aged Metropolis”. Due to the lack of urban center in the metropolitan region, the Metropolis operates various social programs in 2 villages (Spili and Fourfoura), through its affiliated nonprofit organization Cultural and Social Center of Amari “The Saint Nektarios”. The social programs include: social tutoring school, fitness centers, performance/event spaces, religious bookstore, traditional dance classes, traditional musical instruments classes and a Hot Meal Program.
The Hot Meal Program involves the daily delivery of meals for the whole day to the homes of 160 elders, 88 through Spili and 72 through Fourfoura. The use of two locations is necessary in order to reach the 90 of the 110 surrounding villages. The Program started in 2002 in Fourfoura after a large number of elders visited the nearest hospital for malnutrition. The Spili location was added in 2005. In order to get to all the villages on the same day, two vehicles are used, each traveling 100km daily.

The grant regards the provision of food supplies for the Hot Meal Program for 12 months. The beneficiaries are the 160 elderly residents of the 90 villages who will receive the meals. The Hot Meal Program is unique in its nature and has important benefits for elders who live alone, in small villages, scattered throughout the mountains of Crete.
