The Children and Adults Mental Health Community Services Development Federation “Panacea” was founded in Rhodes in 2003 with the aim to offer support to the mentally disabled. Panacea operates 4 programs: a hostel, an apartment, a day center for the mentally disabled, and a day center for Alzheimer’s patients.
Program Support & Software
The grant regards the support of an educational program and the provision of a mental strengthening and physical activity software for Alzheimer’s patients.
The educational program “Learning about Alzheimer’s disease: Why Doesn’t my Grandmother Remember my Name?” has been taught in elementary schools through Rhodes and other islands in the Dodecanese since 2009. The aim of the program is to educate children about Alzheimer’s disease and to engage the younger generation in creative activities with elders suffering from the disease in order to strengthen their mental condition. Through a grant of the TIMA Charitable Foundation during the school year 2013 – 2014, the educational program reached approximately 2,500 children in 12 schools located close to the Rhodes town. During the second year of support that will cover the school year 2014 – 2015, the program is designed to visit 12 schools in villages that are located away from the urban centers. Additionally, the school teachers will receive a special training and educational material so that they can implement related activities and games with the students throughout the year. This element is particularly important for the continuous exposure of children to elderly related matters.
The provision of a mental strengthening and physical activity software will be operated by the day center for Alzheimer’s patients. The specific software’s aim is to increase the autonomy of Alzheimer’s patients and to avoid their institutionalization.
