Program for Elderly Disabled Persons and Elderly Caregivers

The grant regards the creation of a 12-month program that has as its goal the strengthening, safety, and hygiene of elderly disabled persons as well as their elderly caregivers. “Merimna” will communicate with elderly persons that are either disabled themselves or that care for children or other family members who are disabled. Their main needs regarding the secure living (e.g., prevention of falls and accidents) in their homes will be assessed, as well as their psychological and other health and hygiene-related needs. Emphasis will be placed on elderly persons living in isolated villages of Achaia and Ilia Prefectures that do not have access to such services. Individual interventions will be performed at the homes of approximately 140 families with the goal of training the seniors in techniques for their safety at home. With the proper equipment and alterations to the configurations of the homes, these changes will become a functional way of living for the beneficiaries.
