The organization was founded in 1995 by 9 scientists in the field of Health and Education. Merimna provides free counseling centers for children and their families in mourning, as well as a pediatric palliative care service at home. This unique service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Merimna also offers specialized training for health and education professionals, in order to be able to support children, families and school communities, who are experiencing a significant loss. In its 26 years of operation, Merimna has provided free services to more than 50,000 children & families during illness and following death, trained more than 4,500 teachers, 1,000 health & mental health professionals and 1,500 workers with minor refugees & immigrants. It has also worked with more than 1,000 schools to support students after traumatic events or disasters, organized 6 pan-Hellenic conferences, more than 350 workshops and seminars and 1,000 lectures.
Psychological Support & Counseling Services
The grant regards the provision of psychological support and counseling to approximately 100 elderly persons who have lost loved ones. The program seeks to meet the needs of this target group and support the psychological needs of older people who have turned to Merimna for support. The service will provide counseling support by two psychologists remotely or face-to-face. Additionally, psycho-educational content for grandparents via groups of 20 people will be provided. This will include fundamental knowledge about the normal grieving process of children and adults and suggestions for better support. These meetings will take place live or at a distance. An important goal of the psycho-educational meetings will be the better acquaintance between the participants and the mutual support this provides, which allows individuals to form peer groups and also helps towards the sustainability of the project.
